European Lifestyle Medicine Organization takes action
European Lifestyle Medicine Organization (ELMO) is a non-profit non-political, non-religious scientific and medical organization that provides leadership in research, prevention and treatment of lifestyle-related diseases. These diseases are known as chronic diseases and have been lately named by WHO as Non-Communicable diseases (NCDs). They include cancer, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes and Chronic Lung Diseases, as well as an ever-increasing amount of mental disorders. The 68% of deaths from NCDs can be prevented by means of nutrition, physical activity, stress therapy and other environmental factors management.
ELMO is composed by scientists, medical doctors, and experts in medical healthcare, academic professors and other health clinicians worldwide. The original idea for its foundation, was inspired by the pioneer, American College of Lifestyle Medicine, founded back in 2004, that leads the promotion and application of lifestyle medicine in everyday, clinical practice. Despite its recent establishment (2015), ELMO seeks to implement the values and objectives of Lifestyle Medicine by numerous actions and initiatives. Last May 30, the European Lifestyle Medicine Organization (ELMO) visited the European Commission in Brussels, to meet with Dr Vytenis Andriukaitis, the EU Commissioner for Health and Food Safety. Both parties discussed the ELMO principals, actions and the benefits of lifestyle medicine for European population.
