More than 80 people attended the VII Conference on the Medicine of the Future (VII Jornada Anticipando la Medicina del Futuro) on Wednesday, December 11, 2024, held at the Fundación Francisco Giner amphitheater in Madrid. The event was organized by the Instituto Roche Foundation, a member of the pharmaceutical company Roche.

The Instituto Roche Foundation is a non-profit organization established by Roche Farma in 2004 with the mission of bringing the Medicine of the Future into the present through the creation and dissemination of knowledge in the Personalized and Precision Medicine field. At the Instituto Roche Foundation, they firmly believe that the integration of Personalized Precision Medicine represents a paradigm shift in healthcare delivery, introducing prevention, diagnosis, and treatment strategies that are more effective and safer.

They collaborate with all relevant stakeholders to contribute to the development and transformation of the healthcare system through digital health, artificial intelligence, and other innovative tools and technologies essential to making Personalized Precision Medicine a reality in Spain, for the benefit of society and especially patients.

Dr. Valentini Konstantinidou was a member of the committee invited by the Instituto Roche Foundation to oversee and contribute to the creation of the updated report on precision nutrition. She attended the conference, where she shared advancements in the practical application of scientific knowledge as well as the gaps that need to be addressed. The progress achieved within the framework of Personalized Precision Medicine contributes to a better understanding of how nutrition and nourishment influence health and disease, as well as how each individual may respond to a diet based on their unique characteristics.

Precision Nutrition debate

In this context, the third roundtable discussion of the conference, titled “Precision Nutrition,” in which Dr. Valentini Konstantinidou participated, focused on the clinical role of Precision Nutrition. This is a field that, as emphasized by Dr. Joaquín Arenas, Director of the Research Institute at the University Hospital 12 de Octubre in Madrid, aims to integrate clinical, omics, epidemiological, socioeconomic, and lifestyle data to provide personalized and tailored recommendations with a preventive and/or therapeutic approach.

Advances in omics sciences, as well as in technological and computational developments achieved within the framework of Personalized Precision Medicine and applied to nutrition, are deepening our understanding of the factors that influence the interaction between our body and our diet, as well as the differences in outcomes of such interactions among individuals. As highlighted during the discussion, the individual nature of these interactions and the fact that something beneficial for one person may not be for another make it essential to move away from generic dietary recommendations in clinical practice and transition toward Precision Nutrition.

Current and Future Applications of Precision Nutrition

Several current and future applications of Precision Nutrition were presented, including:

  • Adapting general healthy dietary advice to improve aspects such as adherence or sustainability,
  • Using nutrition as a tool for prevention or treatment in chronic complex diseases or monogenic disorders, such as genetic and epigenetic defects affecting metabolism.

Precision Nutrition challenges

Precision Nutrition is an emerging field that must address various challenges for its implementation in everyday practice. Experts outlined some of these challenges, including:

  • The presence of biases associated with the subjectivity of dietary and lifestyle questionnaires.
  • The lack of genetics specialists within the healthcare system.
  • The need for specialization and training for nutritionists and dietitians.
  • The necessity for new technologies in pharmaceutical and food production to deliver novel dietary supplements and/or foods.

Precision Nutrition report in spanish press

The conference’s impact was reflected in over 10 mentions that day in the Spanish media, including newspapers such as La Vanguardia, IM Médico, ISanidad, and Diario Farma, among others. Castilla’s public television also published a detailed documentary on precision nutrition and the discussions held during and after the event.
