Vitamin D deficiency is often described as a silent epidemic, affecting approximately 1 billion people worldwide. Data suggest that around 70% of Americans and 72.03% of the Greek population live with insufficient vitamin D levels. In Greece specifically, the most recent available data (2018) indicate that 72.03% of the population has inadequate vitamin D levels, while 17.55% present with significant deficiency.

According to the same study, as well as updated guidelines from the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA, 2023), sufficient vitamin D status is defined by serum 25(OH)D levels above 30 ng/mL. Levels below 30 ng/mL indicate insufficiency, while levels below 12 ng/mL reflect severe deficiency. Women appear to be more prone to deficiency compared to men. EFSA also notes that, within European populations, exceeding the upper safe intake levels of vitamin D is unlikely unless high-dose supplementation is used consistently.

How can I increase vitamin D in my body?

Increasing vitamin D levels is not an immediate process. It typically requires consistent intervention over several months or longer to achieve and maintain optimal levels. Individual needs vary depending on genetic sensitivity, body composition, and overall health status. A targeted approach, guided by a qualified healthcare professional, is essential.

Some strategies to improve vitamin D levels include:

Optimized nutrition by increasing the intake of foods naturally rich in vitamin D, such as fatty fish (especially small oily fish), salmon, eggs, mushrooms, high-quality fish oils, and beef liver.

Through lifestyle, by increasing daily exposure to sunlight. Approximately 10 minutes of sun exposure per day, with a portion of the skin (such as the arms) uncovered and without sunscreen, can support endogenous vitamin D synthesis.

Through high-quality supplementation, using targeted, high-quality vitamin D supplements. Absorption is optimized when combined with magnesium, vitamin K2, and dietary fat. In cases of severe deficiency, high-dose pharmaceutical vitamin D may be required under medical supervision, followed by maintenance through supplementation.
