How much coffee is good for me?

Coffee is the second most widely consumed beverage worldwide, after water, and for the vast majority of people, it is an integral part of their daily lives. A large body of scientific evidence has demonstrated that caffeine, the most well-known bioactive compound in coffee, can offer significant health benefits, including improved alertness, enhanced metabolic activity, and potential protection against certain chronic diseases, due to coffee’s antioxidant compounds.
However, excessive caffeine intake, from coffee or other sources, has been associated with adverse effects on health and overall well-being, including increased anxiety, sleep disturbances, irritability, and potential cardiovascular implications.

What is the optimal amount of coffee for each individual?
The answer is not universal, and this is where our DNA plays a central role. The field of nutrigenetics provides insight into this variability.
Caffeine metabolism is largely influenced by genetic predisposition, with the CYP1A2 gene playing a key role. This gene encodes the enzyme responsible for breaking down caffeine in the liver. Based on its activity, individuals can be broadly categorized as either fast or slow metabolizers.
- Fast metabolizers process and eliminate caffeine more efficiently, and typically experience fewer adverse effects, even at higher intakes.
- Slow metabolizers retain caffeine in the body longer, which may increase the risk of elevated blood pressure, sleep disturbances, and other side effects, even at moderate doses.
Beyond metabolism, genetic variability also influences how caffeine interacts with nutrient absorption. For example, consuming coffee alongside dairy products may reduce the absorption of calcium, vitamin D, and certain B vitamins, such as thiamine (vitamin B1). Over time, habitual caffeine intake without appropriate timing may contribute to suboptimal nutrient status, particularly in more vulnerable populations.
Where is caffeine, beyond coffee?
It is also important to recognize that coffee is not the only source of caffeine. The following can all contribute to the total daily caffeine intake:
- Tea, particularly black and green varieties,
- cola-type soft drinks,
- energy drinks,
- chocolate and cocoa-containing products, as well as
- certain medications and dietary supplements

According to current guidelines from the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), the FDA, and the Mayo Clinic, daily caffeine intake for healthy adults should not exceed 400 mg, which corresponds to approximately three to four cups of coffee.
For pregnant or breastfeeding women, intake is generally recommended to remain below 200 mg per day, although individualization is essential based on overall health status and additional factors. These recommendations apply to the general population, while individuals with genetic sensitivity to caffeine, cardiovascular conditions, or anxiety may require further adjustments.
It is important to emphasize that caffeine is not an essential nutrient, and its consumption is not required for optimal human nutrition.

What are the risks of too much caffeine?
Excessive caffeine intake, typically above 400 mg per day, may lead to a range of physiological effects, such as:
- disrupted sleep,
- heightened anxiety,
- nervousness,
- increased heart rate,
- gastrointestinal discomfort,
- elevated blood pressure, and in some cases,
- dependence and withdrawal symptoms.
At very high doses, more serious complications may occur, underscoring the importance of moderation and personalization.
